Science and Heritage
Helping to future-proof the UK's cultural heritage
The Science and Heritage programme provided a focus for those wishing to engage with science and heritage, and ensured that knowledge is disseminated widely so that our cultural heritage is in better shape to confront the challenges of the 21st century.
The Science and Heritage Programme is funded by the AHRC and Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and is supported by Research Councils UK. It took forward recommendations made by the House of Lords Science and Technology Select Committee report on science and heritage of November 2006 which concluded that there was a compelling need for a comprehensive national strategy for heritage science which covered both immoveable and moveable heritage.
This joint five year research programme had a dual purpose: it provided funding opportunities for high quality research to increase our understanding, and improved the resilience of cultural heritage in the face of 21st century challenges. It also developed the heritage science community by funding networks and other awareness-raising and capacity building activities.
Full details about the programme are available on the Science and Heritage website.
