Tips on working in partnership

A number of Connected Communities project partners were interviewed to gather their thoughts for a future call, but also for their thoughts on how to achieve a successful project. Here are some of their top tips:

(All quotations are taken from Connected Communities project lead investigators.)

1. Align your goals

“You’ve got to be clear from the start, be up front about what all of the partners want from the project.”

2. Be flexible

“These things build and grow over time, expect that things will change and adapt as you go.”

3. Be clear on who will benefit from the project

“You need to know who your audience are, who are you trying to help?”

4. Ensure the work is ‘collaborative’ not divided

“For a true inter-disciplinary project everyone should work on all parts of the projects, it shouldn’t be sectioned off into different parts, or you won’t work together or learn.”

5. Listen to each other

“You need to listen and listen well, visit each other, see how you operate.”

“Cultures are radically different, talk to each other to find out how you each work”

6. Discuss and be open about issues of project sustainability and legacy from the outset

“The funding eventually stops but the community will want the project to continue and you need to think about how.”

7. Give the community ownership of the project

“The community chair the meetings, take notes, sometimes it’s about giving them ownership of the project.”

Top Tips on putting a bid together

1. Think creatively about ways to engage others in bid writing processes given that academics will ultimately take lead responsibility for the bid

“It’s difficult for others to fit the mechanisms of academics, although we discuss the ideas we do write it.”

“Practitioners can’t express themselves in the academic way.”

2. Make the most of networking events

 “There’s lots of ideas at these events, they’re great for forming partnerships.”

3. Agree project goals before you start writing

“There can be a lot of consultation before you agree on what you’re doing.”

“When you’re writing think about what each partner will do and how they’ll contribute to the goals.”
