The Research Councils UK invite applications from influential policy organisations to join the RCUK Policy Internship scheme in the capacity of a hosting partner for the 2017/18 and 2018/19 competitions.
The RCUK Policy Internship scheme provides the opportunity for Research Council-funded PhD students to undertake a three month placement at the partner of their choice working on one or more policy topics of interest to both the student and the organisation, by producing at least one briefing paper, participating in a policy inquiry and/or organising a policy event. All internships must be completed in calendar year 2018.
Students in the arts and humanities have benefited from participation in this scheme for six years. Their experiences have broadened their field of knowledge, particularly with regard to the ways that research can feed into policy, and they have been able to demonstrate the versatility and applicability of skills that research in the arts and humanities brings. Additionally, they have developed awareness of careers in policy organisations, in some cases going into this field upon completing their doctoral study, and building relationships between research and policy organisations.
The hosting partners have also benefited from the aptitudes and work ethic that the interns have brought to the organisation. They have contributed to organising events and conferences, producing briefing papers and position papers, participating in stakeholder engagement, compiling information and proof-reading, and drafting speeches and publicity material.
This call for hosting partners is open to any UK-based policy organisation that can demonstrate relevance to the remit of two or more Research Councils. Hosting partners are responsible for sifting applications and interviewing applicants wishing to undertake internships at their organisation during October 2017. Hosting partners are also required to provide a co-funding contribution to the Research Organisation of each intern they support. This co-funding contribution will equal the Travel and Accommodation costs incurred by the student up to a maximum limit of £2,400 for the duration of the internship.
Hosting partner applications will be assessed by a group of Research Council representatives involved in the RCUK Policy Internship Scheme, with successful applicants contacted via email by the end of May 2017.
