Professor Andrew Thompson – UKRI International Champion

UKRI is pleased to announce that Professor Andrew Thompson will continue working with UKRI as the International Champion until 31 March 2021.

Professor Thompson is currently the Executive Chair of the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) International Champion.

To maintain momentum and retain crucial expertise across this critical period, Professor Thompson, as International Champion, will continue to be responsible and accountable for the delivery and development of the UKRI International Strategy, including EU planning and broader strategic planning for the future, advising on the Newton and Global Challenges Research (GCRF) ODA funds, the Fund for International Collaboration, and other cross-cutting funds relevant to global challenges.

He will also Chair the International Committee and lead on the International Strategy, which will report into the Executive Committee, as well as being accountable for the structure and operations of the International Shared Capability function.

Professor Thompson will retain line management responsibility for the Director of International and the Director for International Development Programmes during this time.

The role as International Champion will take effect from 1 September 2020 and continue until 31 March 2021.

From 1 September 2020, Professor Christopher Smith assumes his role as the new Executive Chair of the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), replacing Professor Andrew Thompson in that capacity.
