Scottish EDGE Fund Awards businesses that use research

Two businesses who have received funding and business support from research project Design in Action, University of Dundee have been successful at this year’s Scottish EDGE Fund Awards final at the RBS Conference Centre in Gogarburn, Edinburgh.

Beer52, a monthly subscription club that delivers craft beer from Scottish microbreweries run by entrepreneur James Brown, won £5k in the Young EDGE category. Nautilus Beam Ltd with their ‘Tusi’ technology that provides a user-friendly text input interface on smartwatches received £10k (the maximum awarded) following their win in the Wild Card EDGE category.

James, named as one of Forbes UK magazine's ‘Top 6 Most Exciting Young Entrepreneurs in 2014’, was also successful in the main Scottish EDGE competition, walking away with further investment (50% prize, 50% repayable loan) of £40,000.

Design in Action, is immensely proud to have two of our partner businesses achieve recognication by the Scottish Edge Awards. It's a fantastic achievement, and acknowledges the use of our research to support new businesses in the economy, said Georgina Follett, Director Design in Action.

Both companies originated from the AHRC-funded Design in Action Knowledge Exchange Hub, based within DJCAD at the University of Dundee following attendance at their trademarked design-based ideation workshops, Chiasma. James participated in the first Food-focused event in Elgin in April 2013 and subsequently received £20k investment, allowing him to launch in September that year. Since then, Beer52's reputation and business has gone from strength-to-strength, making them the No.1 Craft Beer Club in the UK.

Nautilus was formed following attendance Design in Action's Technology Accelerator Chiasma (TAC), run in partnership with the University's Research and Innovation Services department after their successful application for an Intellectual Property Office Fast Forward grant, in January this year. The event focused on creating innovative products or services with new or existing University of Dundee digital imaging IP. Nautilus' idea to make smartwatch screens – a rapidly growing market following the launch of the Apple iWatch and other rivals - more accessible and easy to navigate, clinched them £30k of funding and continued business advice and support from DiA.

Scottish EDGE, previously run by Scottish Enterprise and Highlands and Islands Enterprise and now endowed by serial entrepreneur Sir Tom Hunter, the Royal Bank of Scotland PLC and the Scottish Government, is a funding competition aimed at identifying Scotland's top young, early stage and high growth potential entrepreneurs.

The competition, now in its 6th year, welcomed 100s of industry, academia and investment representatives to Edinburgh to watch the finalists pitch their business to the expert panel including Scottish EDGE Chairman, David Shearer, Chief HR Officer of RBS, Elaine Arden, HIE's Director of Regional Development, Carroll Buxton, family dairy Grahams, Marketing Director, Carol Graham and high-profile venture capitalist, David Sneddon (SEP) with the winners announced at an evening dinner event held on Friday 12th June.
