Spend half-term exploring a Roman town in virtual reality at Fishbourne Roman Palace and Gardens.

Based on the archaeological remains of a real neighbourhood (known as Insula IX), excavated at the Roman town of Silchester by the University of Reading, the buildings appear in front of you, recreated in VR and ready for you to discover. Information gathered from archaeological records and Roman texts reveal the main sounds and smells of the time, which form part of the experience, making you feel you as if you are right there in an ordinary Roman town. Walking around Silchester, dogs bark, flies buzz, people chatter, the blacksmith bangs his hammer, and the smells of the cesspit, the animals, and the herb garden waft around you.

Sensations of Roman Life is part of Fishbourne's Roman Army Week. As well as exploring the Roman town there will be lots of other activities to get involved in, including 'sword' and 'spear' practice and archery. For full details go to the Fishbourne Roman Palace and Gardens website.
