Newton Fund

Official Development Assistance (ODA) update

Please refer to ODA review for the latest information on ODA.

The Newton Fund is an initiative that aims to promote the economic development and social welfare of partner countries. The Fund was launched in 2014 and originally consisted of £75 million each year for five years. In the 2015 UK Spending Review it was agreed to extend the Fund to 2021 and it was expanded by doubling the £75 million investment to £150 million by 2021. The total UK investment now stands at £735 million, with partner countries providing matched resources within the Fund.

The Fund forms part of the UK’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) commitment which is monitored by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). ODA funded activity focuses on outcomes that promote the long term sustainable growth of countries on the OECD Development Assistance Committee list. There are 18 partner countries in the Newton Fund which represent a sub-set of this list.

UK Research and innovation is one of the UK delivery partners for the Newton Fund and is working strategically with partner countries to develop a series of research activities that address challenges defined by the overarching ambitions of the Fund. Commitment to the partnership is further demonstrated by matched resource from partner countries, bringing substantial additional value.

The AHRC has worked closely with partner countries to identify areas where arts and humanities research can make a significant contribution to the aims of the Newton Fund. Through these partnerships the AHRC has developed the following new research programmes under the Newton Fund:

  • Cultural Heritage and Rapid Urbanisation in India
  • Preserving Egypt’s Cultural Heritage: Mitigating Threats for a Sustainable Future
  • Social Change through Creativity and Culture in Brazil
  • Living Research: Making in China (in partnership with the British Council)
  • Centre for Digital Copyright and Intellectual Property Research in China
  • Two Centuries of Indian Print: pilot project on Bengali Books
