Rising from the Depths Network – Final round of Innovation projects

Return to opportunities

The Rising from the Depths network aims to identify and utilise the Marine Cultural Heritage (MCH) of Eastern Africa to create tangible benefits in Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique and Madagascar. The network will fund a range of Innovation Research Projects in the region. These are network funded, co-created research projects that aim to identify new opportunities and methods for using and protecting MCH.

They are looking to fund challenge-led, coordinated and multi-disciplinary engagement with Eastern Africa’s extraordinarily rich Marine Cultural Heritage. They envisage commissioning a diverse programme of MCH orientated research projects across Kenya, Tanzania, Madagascar and Mozambique. To this end, they will consider any project that is relevant to, or deals with MCH in Eastern Africa, as long as they are collaborative, co-produced and challenge-led, producing a clear benefit (economic, social, environmental or cultural) for those living in coastal regions in Eastern Africa. You can read more about the research challenge here. Projects must be rooted in the Arts and Humanities and may have interactions/ramifications in other areas.

The network has £800,000 to fund projects from, of which £100,000 of this budget is ring-fenced for the development of innovative, multidisciplinary arts and creative industry approaches to MCH under the title, People, Time and the Sea.

This is the final call for applications and is divided into small (up to £5,000 at 100% fEC) and medium (£5,000-£10,000 at 100% fEC) projects. All awards can be for up to 9 months in duration, but must be completed by the end of September 2020. Applications must be made through the online form by 5pm (UK time) on the 31st of October 2019. If you have any issues using the only form, please email risingfromthedepths@nottingham.ac.uk as soon as possible outlining the issues you are having.
